We welcome the announcement of His Excellency the President in the Parliament of Sri Lanka yesterday (25th August,2011) that has made the people of Sri Lanka free from the draconian rules of the Emergency Law. Emergency regulation has been in force for almost three decades except for small intervals. Though it was somewhat justified during the height of the war against LTTE and JVP, there has always been a considered view that there were excesses on the part of those who used it for indiscriminate killings, arbitrary arrests, indefinite detentions of suspects and denial of access for the detainees.
Pathmanabha EPRLF along with many other political parties and civil society organisations across the country; called for the removal of the Emergency Law particularly after May 2009.
We sincerely hope that this is a significant step towards the expansion of democratization process and an extended opening to ensure the rule of law, for which all peoples of Sri Lanka have been yearning for.
In this occasion of great turn made by His Excellency the President Mahinda Rajapakse, Pathmanabha EPRLF wish to call upon all the actors of the State to exercise their powers with utmost care to establish the confidence of the people on our political system and all the socio-political stakeholders to act with responsibility to further enhance the political space and to create conducive conditions for the political solution that is essential for this country to be built up as a vibrant nation of all the national communities living here..
