National ID Cards in Sinhala and Tamil!

Wednesday, March 12, 2014
Colombo::The Department for Registration of Persons has begun issuing National Identity Cards in Sinhala and Tamil from 28th February (2014). The new bi-lingual ID cards will be printed in both Sinhala and Tamil under the new system that would prevent issues or inconveniences that may have risen in the past and also would provide a solution to the language problem as well.

The move to issue ID cards in Sinhala and Tamil comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling on a fundamental rights case, SC Application No 93/2013(F/R) to issue the bi-lingual ID cards as a provisional measure with effect from 01.01.2014 until the electronic ID cards are issued.

The department is in the process of making arrangements to issue electronic ID card by 2016.

Under the new process all ID cards issued from 28th February 2014 will be printed in Sinhala and Tamil. The process began during 2013 under the direction and supervision of Secretary Defence and Urban Development Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
