Colombo::The Defence Ministry too rejoices the celebrations and warmly welcomes the dawn of the New Year.
Officials and the staff of the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development along with their families celebrated the traditional Sinhala and Hindu New Year festival at Air force grounds (Rifle Green) (06th April).
Secretary Defence, Mr. Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the Chairperson of MOD Seva Vanitha Unit Mrs. Ioma Rajapaksa graced the occasion as the chief guests.
Fostering the nation's cultural values on all occasions, Ministry of Defence celebrated this festival with their comrades from diverse cultural backgrounds in equal enthusiasm its being an ideal platform to showcase the national unity.
The April New Year, celebrated by Sinhalese and Tamil communities belonging mainly to Buddhist and Hindu faiths, brings two communities together and strengthens their cultural bonds.
The event comprised with traditional delicacies, games and cultural shows added a pleasing view to the eyes of all. Participants displayed their eagerness in engaging traditional games showcasing the unity and joy of New Year festive with their family members. Among the traditional entertainments, Pillow fight, Tug of War, Avrudu kumari and Avurudu kumara was taken the impression of the audience being eye-catching competitions. Staff members adjudged the winners were rewarded with gifts by the chief guests.
Ministry officials and a large gathering were present at the event.
