President Mahinda Rajapaksa opens Sri Lanka's 38th National Sports Festival!

Srilanka::President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday ceremonially inaugurated the 38th National Sports Festival at the Sugathadasa Stadium complex in Colombo.
The President said that he was extending his greetings to all athletes who are participating in the Sports Festival representing all the provinces in the country and called on them to promote brotherhood.
Eastern Province's A A Karunawansa set a new Sri Lanka record in the women's pole vault event on the first day of the 38th National Sports Festival held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.
Nearly 1200 athletes representing all the Provinces, including the North and East are participating in the Sports Festival.
Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage also participated at the colourful opening ceremony.
The Olympic torch was lit by the Sri Lanka's ace middle-distance runner Jayamini Illeperuma and Javalin thrower Pradeep Nishantha.
Several ministers, parliamentarians, chief ministers of provinces and many other distinguished guests were present.
Ten final events are scheduled for today, the second day of the three-day national games starting with the men's pole vault event at 8.30am.
