Colombo::Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage delivering the welcome address at The Nautical Institute’s AGM & International Seminar being held at the BMICH stated that this is the best time in expanding the awareness of the maritime profession as Sri Lanka is looking forward to the thriving maritime opportunities. HE the President wishes to develop and drive the island-nation as the “Wonder of Asia” and make it a hub for maritime activities, he emphasized. He further stated that a professional association like The Nautical Institute composes a vital and strong entity in achieving the island-nation’s aspirations and ambitions. As such, he went on to add, we in the profession of nautical affairs, look forward for further strengths in these associations as they offer a whole new future for our future generations.
The Nautical Institute, the leading international professional association for qualified mariners and those associated with the marine profession which counts membership across 110 countries promoting high standards of professionalism through a vibrant network of over 40 branches spread across the globe, held its Annual General Meeting at the BMICH on 31st May 2013. The international seminar themed ‘Maritime Administration - Where at, where to? ’ also got underway to coincide with the high profile event organized and hosted by the Sri Lanka Branch this year under the direction of its incumbent Chairman, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage, RSP, VSV, USP, rcds, psc, MSc (DS), MA (IS), Dip in IR, Dip in CR, AFNI.
Senior Minister for International Monetary Co-operation & Deputy Minister of Finance & Planning, Hon. Sarath Amunugama graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Project Minister of Ports & Highways, Hon. Rohitha Abeygunawardana was also among the distinguished guests present. Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy & Chairman, The Nautical Institute Sri Lanka Branch, Vice Admiral Jayanath Colombage delivered the Welcome Address at the inaugural session. The keynote speech was made by Mr. Andy Winbow FNI, Assistant Secretary General of the IMO, which is the UN body tasked with the responsibility for international maritime matters.
Knowledgeable speakers in their relevant fields are also scheduled to talk on a range of topics that include administration policy, national regulations, port state control, ship owning and management, the shipmaster and never ending paperwork for the ISM code at the seminar which concludes on 01st June. The seminar will also afford participants a chance to engage in open panel discussions giving them an opportunity to interact with the speakers. It is envisaged that a delegate participant resolution for the considered benefit of the maritime profession will be presented at the end of the conference.
